Albeit more than 700000 asteroids has been discovered, only a small fraction of them have a shape model. Most shape models came out from lightcurve inversion techiques that provide only an approximation of asteroid's outer hull but unfortunately are unable to resolve small features like ridges or craters. A few asteroids were observed by radars or even visited by spacecraft (Eros, Itokawa and Vesta are probably the most famous ones), thus resulting in detailed shape models.
